A 13-year-old girl was raped in Ashokenagar in North 24 Parganas on Monday when she stepped out of her home. She is undergoing treatment at Barasat District Hospital. Police said the accused was arrested on Tuesday and it is being investigated if any other person was involved in the crime.
Meanwhile, a group of Left supporters and intellectuals met the police administration of North 24 Paragans district on Wednesday to make sure that the case is properly investigated. They complained about a string of crimes reported from Barasat subdivision in North 24 Parganas district, neighbouring Kolkata, in recent months. The team also submitted a representation to Additional SP of Barasat. Bhaskar Mukherjee demanding preventive measures be taken in Barasat to stop such crimes.
Leftist social activist and theatre personality Chandan Sen, who led the seven-member team, said the rape survivor and her parents were made to wait for five hours in the Ashokenagar police station before their complaint was registered.
“The girl was in a critical condition while she was made to wait at the police station. The incident occurred in the afternoon and by the time she was admitted she was bleeding profusely,” Mr. Sen said.
According to Mr. Sen, the girl was initially admitted to Ashoknagar General Hospital but had to be shifted to the Barasat District hospital as the former lacked a gynaecologist. The girl’s condition had improved, he said.
