The Opposition parties, particularly the Communist Party of India (Marxist), are trying to create disturbance in the city for the upcoming civic polls, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and State Education Minister Partha Chaterjee said here on Tuesday.

He was responding to allegations made by political parties in the Opposition that their candidates contesting civic polls are being attacked by supporters of the ruling TMC.

Another TMC leader and State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said these allegations were made by the Opposition as they have nothing on the ground to politically counter the TMC.

Mr Chatterjee said that after taking over the responsibility of CPI(M) in the State, CPI(M) State Secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra has decided on a policy of creating disorder in the city.

“We will not tolerate any attempts at creating unrest in Kolkata. Administration will take required action,” the TMC leader said. Some people are trying to get votes with the help of a few media houses, Mr Chaterjee added.

Meanwhile, State Election Commissioner S.R. Upadhyay said that he has written two letters to the State government seeking report on the law and order situation of the State and on the deployment of Central forces.

The last communication made to the State government was on April 6, Mr Upadhyay said, adding that there has been no response so far.
