Retired Calcutta High Court judge C.S. Karnan who was arrested from Coimbatore late on Tuesday night, will be brought to Kolkata on Wednesday. Police officials said that he will reach Kolkata later in the day.
Justice (Retd.) Karnan was evading arrest since May 9 following the Supreme Court's verdict sentencing him to six months imprisonment for contempt of court.
“Justice (Retd.) Karnan will be brought to Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon. He will be taken to Presidency Jail (in South Kolkata) after medical examination,” Additional Director General of Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Rajesh Kumar told The Hindu.
The flight will take off from Chennai around mid day, officials said.
A senior CID official described the the arrest of Justice Karnan as a “difficult task.”
“When such a senior person is involved we can't treat him like an ordinary criminal,” he said. Justice Karnan was arrested from a resort at Malumichampatti near Coimbatore between Podanur and Madukkari.
The judge retired on June 12.
In February, the Supreme Court issued a contempt of court notice against Justice Karnan for allegedly degrading the judicial institution.
A seven-judge Bench, led by the Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar, heard Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi who said that Justice Karnan should face contempt proceedings for his “scurrilous” letters against sitting and retired High Court and Supreme Court judges.
Justice Karnan had written to the Prime Minister and allegedly accused several retired and sitting Supreme Court and High Court judges of corruption.
