Five persons were injured when a New Jalpaiguri-bound toy train derailed at Kurseong in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Tuesday.

The injured, including the driver of the train, were admitted to Kurseong Hospital, District Magistrate Anurag Shrivastav said.

“The accident occurred at 3.30 pm when the engine and one coach got derailed,” Pranab Jyoti Sharma Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North East Frontier Railways told The Hindu . Mr Sharma said the derailment of toy train was “very unusual.”

The causes of the accident are being looked into, he said. According to the Railway officials, the train did not have many tourists onboard.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which operates the toy train, was started in 1881 when Sir Ashley Eden was the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
