Twenty four hours after a woman was allegedly gang raped in a moving car in Salt Lake on the eastern fringes of the city, police arrested three suspects from Haroa in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday. “Suvendu Nag, Sourav Dey and Arnab Bera were nabbed from the house of Nag’s relative. One more accused is absconding,” said Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar, Jawed Shamim.

A senior officer said medical examination on the woman had confirmed gang rape. Her condition was now stable.

According to senior police officials investigating the case, the woman worked in a nightclub. She had not gone to work that day (on Monday) and had been to a hotel in South Kolkata. “From there she took a taxi to Salt Lake Sector V and reached there at around midnight to go to a coffee shop. But she had trouble locating the place she asked Bera for directions,” a senior police officer said. Bera told her he would ask his friends. He called someone on his mobile phone and soon afterwards a car arrived and picked up both of them. “The accused stopped the car near a theme park about 6 km from the spot and they took turns raping her,” the official said.

There is some confusion about whether she was raped inside the moving car. The car has been recovered and forensic tests would be completed by Wednesday.
