Residents of Kannankurichi and members of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) submitted a petition to the district administration here on Monday demanding that the Tasmac shop functioning in the area be closed.

Residents of Ward 3 in Kannankurichi Town Panchayat said that shop number 7253 is functioning in their area where people frequently move. A government school is also located in the area where over 1,000 children study. School students have to pass through the shop to reach their school everyday. Since, customers of the shop stand on road, women cannot move on the road. Also, after consuming liquor, empty bottles, water sachets and other plastic materials were dumped on the road. They also involve in mischief activities, the petition said. Despite lodging complaints with the Kannankurichi Police Station, no action has been taken so far, the petition said. Hence, residents wanted the shop to be relocated to other place.

In Namakkal district, over 50 residents of M.G.R. Nagar staged protest outside a Tasmac shop demanding its closure. They said that the shop was recently opened amid stiff opposition from them. They urged the administration to closure the shop and warned of intensifying their protest if the shop is not closed.
