Committees need to be formed to protect women from violence and exploitation, and these should function at a district level, but be coordinated at the state level.
This was one of the resolutions taken at a two-day workshop on ‘Halting increasing oppression and exploitation of women in Tamil Nadu’, conducted by the Human Rights Advocacy and Research Foundation (HRF), SNEHA and Law Trust, recently.
It is important to sensitise both men and women on the laws protecting women, and provide socio-cultural awareness on the roots of male domination, said Ossie Fernandes of HRF.
To promote gender sensitisation, workshops would be held for men, media personnel and officials, a release from the foundation said. “We are also planning to approach the government to conduct similar training,” V. Indira of HRF said.
The judiciary, police, statutory commissions, human rights commissions and other institutions connected to the criminal justice system should be trained in the new laws governing women, especially those on violence and sexual abuse, the release added.
