A construction worker killed himself after assaulting his wife on Sunday.

The couple’s three-and-a-half-year old daughter, Lathika, is now under the care of family members.

The incident, which took place in a thickly populated residential locality in Mudichur, has left many people wanting tighter regulations for the operation of government liquor outlets.

Kumaran, who was addicted to liquor, had subjected his wife to severe forms of torture almost on a daily basis, according to the couple’s close relatives. On Saturday evening, the couple had fought. Around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday, Kumaran, in a fit of rage, hit his wife Rajeswari on the head with a hammer. She sustained injuries and collapsed.

Kumaran called his brother, Siva in Wandavasi, and said he had ‘killed’ his wife and had decided to put an end to his life. He then hung himself from the ceiling.

While Kumaran’s body was removed to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet, Rajeswari was referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, where she is undergoing treatment. Peerkankaranai police are investigating.
