Work on Mudichur power supply station drags on

December 16, 2014 08:33 am | Updated 08:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Residents in suburban Mudichur are not happy with the State government over a crucial project that has been pending for a long time.

Construction of a 33/11 kilovolt sub-station in A.N. Colony, Mudichur, which began six months ago, has come to a halt. Residents recall that in 2007, land was identified to construct a sub-station to improve power supply. Both the Mudichur Panchayat and the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union gave their consent to part with 80 cents of land — originally earmarked for a park — for the project.

“Sources at Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said the construction was stopped due to a payment issue between contractors and workers. The project has been scheduled for completion in January, but we doubt it will be completed by then,” says S. Sampathkumar, a resident of Manimangalam Road.

P. Damodaran, Mudichur Village Panchayat president, says people have already been complaining to them about the slow progress.

“We are in touch with officials and want them to complete the work at the earliest. Otherwise, it will be a difficult summer for us next year,” he says.

Officials say cable-laying work from Pudhu Thangal has been completed till Krishna Nagar. The remaining work will be taken up soon. If completed, the substation will ensure equal power distribution to 5,000 families in Varadharajapuram and 7,000 households in Mudichur and Old Perungalathur.
