A 45-year-old woman who allegedly conned patients at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (GH) for the last four years and robbed nearly 150 sovereigns of gold jewellery was apprehended by an undercover police team on Wednesday.

Two members of the hospital staff who were her accomplices have been detained.

Sources with the GH police said the suspect, Shanti Raja, a resident of a TNHB apartment in Kilpauk, was tipped off by the staff members about women patients who came alone to GH.

“She befriended the women by offering help at the hospital and primarily cheated those going for a CT scan or X-ray. She would advise the victim to remove their jewellery and offer to keep it safe, only to flee with the ornaments,” said an investigating officer.

Following repeated complaints, five police personnel led by sub-inspectors Devaraj and Masilamaniposed as patients and combed the wards for over two weeks. They apprehended Shanti on Wednesday afternoon.
