A woman, who came with her husband to Poes Garden on Thursday afternoon, attempted to immolate herself to ensure that A. Prabhu, who has got an AIADMK ticket is prevented from contesting from Kallakurichi.
Around 11 a.m., S. Gopu and S. Parimala of Thiyagadurgam, Kallakurichi district, reached Poes Garden with the intention of meeting Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and submitting a petition seeking to prevent Prabhu from contesting.
“We were stopped by the policemen, and all of a sudden, Parimala took out a bottle full of kerosene and doused herself in it. I did not know she was holding the bottle. Seeing this, I hugged her and prevented her from setting herself on fire,” said Gopu.
