A 58-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging on Tuesday after her son was booked for sexual assault.
Police said the suspect, Kumaran alias Muthukumaran (32), a resident of a TNSCB tenement in Nochikuppam, allegedly assaulted a one-and-a-half-year-old girl in his neighbourhood on Saturday. The victim’s mother lodged a complaint and the Mylapore police registered a case and launched a hunt for Kumaran.
Kumaran’s mother Kasturi was questioned about his whereabouts. Humiliated by the experience, she hung herself in her house, the police said. A relative of Kasturi’s who came to her house on Tuesday morning, found her hanging from a ceiling fan.
Mylapore police carried out a preliminary investigation and sent the body for a post-mortem examination to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Kumaran is still absconding.
Kasturi’s family claims the girl’s family had a grudge against Kumaran’s family, and that the complaint was a way to settle scores. However, they have filed no complaint in this regard, police said. The little girl, who allegedly suffered bruises and cuts on her body, was admitted to hospital for treatment. Her condition is said to be stable.
