A woman constable used a cycle tube to rescue a man who had jumped into the Cooum in Naduvankarai, Anna Nagar on Wednesday morning.

The incident took place around 11.15 a.m. when the man, Ramesh (39), a native of Villupuram, jumped off the Naduvankarai bridge.

Ramesh, a private security guard who works at an apartment complex on AG block in Anna Nagar, was drunk and later cited family problems as the reason for taking the extreme step.

According to police sources, a constable with the intelligence section, who was passing by on his motorcycle, spotted the man jumping and alerted constable Usha Rani at a police booth nearby.

Ms. Rani, attached to the Anna Nagar All Women Police Station, grabbed a cycle tube from a shop nearby, ran down to the river along with a resident and threw one end of the tube into the river.

Ramesh grabbed the other end and the woman constable, along with the unidentified man, pulled him to safety.

He was soon sent to a hospital where his condition was reported to be stable, sources added.
