Wetland centre planned

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

In an effort to promote the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands across the State, the government has decided to set up the Tamil Nadu Wetland and Environment Centre within the campus of the Adyar Poonga.

Slated to come up in over 1.4 acres, the Centre would include laboratory, a hands-on activity area for children, exhibition halls, a museum and an observation tower.

A closed circuit television system would also come up across the Poonga to supply a live video feed to a room in the observation tower.

“We have invited consultants to come up with designs,” said a senior government official.

The building would be LEED platinum rated, and modern green construction standards would be adopted, the official said. The centre would also incorporate effective rainwater harvesting systems, a solar power module, and water recycling and reuse system.

Calling the Adyar creek and estuary eco-restoration a “unique and innovative project”, the official said the time has come to showcase the model and make it replicable by encouraging other cities to adopt a similar approach.

“The centre would also be used to educate children about the idea of conservation,” the official added.

The Adyar eco park is currently spread over 58 acres along the creek of the Adyar River.

An additional 300 acres is under restoration and is expected to be completed by mid-2015.
