Van runs over woman on Wall Tax Road

A 50-year-old woman, who she was walking on Wall Tax Road, was run over by a van, late Thursday night.

According to police, Balammal, who was married to Palani and had four children — two daughters and two sons, used to live on the platform on Rasappa Street on Wall Tax Road Junction. Around 11.30 p.m. on Thursday, she was walking on the road towards her home after she had her dinner.

At this juncture, a parcel van which was taking a U-turn hit her. She came under the wheels of the van and died on the spot.

On witnessing the incident, locals surrounded the van, pulled the driver out and damaged the vehicle. He was handed over to Flower Bazaar traffic police. The woman’s body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The driver was identified as Pandian of Theni district and he has been remanded to judicial custody.
