Two persons were arrested on Saturday in Nanganallur for possession of a panchaloha idol of goddess Amman. A police team, during a routine patrol, found the duo — V. Tyagarajan (31) and M. Kalyanasundraram (63) — roaming around on Nanganallur 100 feet main road with a cloth bag.
When asked about their particulars, the men gave different answers. The policemen became suspicious and checked the bag only to find the idol.
As the men were unable to give a proper explanation about how the idol came into their hands, the police took them into custody. During interrogation, the men said that Kalyanasundraram, a real estate broker, used to regularly meet a man called Rajan, who lives in Saidapet, to discuss land deals.
During one such meeting recently, Rajan had given Kalyanasundraram the idol and asked him to sell it and give him the money.
It was with this intention that Kalyanasundraram and Tyagarajan were roaming about Nanganallur, which has a considerable Brahmin population. The idol is one metre tall and weighs around two kg. The men were arrested and sent to the central prison in Puzhal.
