The government is contemplating building two flyovers on Anna Salai (Mount Road) – one between the junction of Wallajah Road-Blackers Road and Patullos Road and another between Anna Arivalayam in Teynampet and the Government Veterinary Hospital in Saidapet.
On Friday, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi viewed physical models of the proposed flyovers at the Secretariat. He was briefed by government officials.
Originally, as part of the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project, the authorities had planned to build five flyovers, two north of the Anna flyover and three south of the flyover. Later, they chose to wait till the completion of alignment of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. Now, the Metro Rail officials conveyed to the Highways department that at least foundation work should be completed before the commencement of tunnelling work for the Metro Rail project, likely to begin by March 2011. The present plan is to build just two more flyovers on Anna Salai.
Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Highways Minister Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan, Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi and Highways Secretary G. Santhanam were among those who were present.
