Contract killing gang leader held in Pune with accomplice

Chennai City Police arrested on Monday two persons, including the main accused, in the sensational murder of Babu Singh, who operated a travel agency in Sowcarpet. The 50-year-old businessman was shot dead at his office on Erulappan Street, Sowcarpet, on May 3.

Confirming the arrests, a senior official of Chennai City Police said that based on the investigation and from the CCTV footage, Rakesh (28), the main accused in the shooting of the businessman, was apprehended with the help of Pune police from a hideout in the city.

Rakesh, the leader of a contract killing gang, was arrested along with his accomplice, he added.

The official said that after the arrest of the two persons, a special police team had taken them to Mumbai for an interrogation aimed at ascertaining the motive behind the murder and the other persons involved.

The City Police had formed seven special teams to crack the case.

The police official said the first breakthrough came when they secured the auto driver who had transported the hired killers to the victim’s travel agency office.

He said that based on the information received from the auto driver, the police identified the killers to be from north India.

The police had also announced a reward for anyone who could provide leads into the murder.
