Tunnelling at May Day Park to begin next month

October 25, 2012 09:27 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:00 pm IST - CHENNAI:

As part of the ongoing metro rail work, tunnelling at May Day Park will start in the first week of November.

The two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), which have already been assembled at the park in Chintadripet, will cover a distance of 2820 metres from Anna Salai to Gemini.

“Initially we will start tunnelling at the rate of one metre a day. Eventually we will increase the speed by five metres a day. It will take five months for a TBM to cover a distance of one kilometre,” an official said.

Meanwhile the tunnelling operations from Saidapet to Gemini are likely to begin in a month’s time since the two TBMs meant for the site are still lying at Chennai Port.
