In an effort to promote higher education and support underprivileged students, United Vellalar Trust was launched in the city on Saturday.
Founded by the VIT University’s chancellor G. Viswanathan, the trust aims to help underprivileged students to get access to education and proper employment. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the launch, Mr. Viswanathan said many students, particularly girls in rural areas, still do not have access to higher education.
Every year, about Rs. 1 crore in donations is to be collected to disburse scholarships to students belonging to various communities. “We will take the help of the Trust’s local committees in each district and elected representatives to identify the students in need of financial support,” he said.
The trust also plans to seek admissions in colleges for deserving students. Former Supreme Court of India judge S. Natarajan launched the trust on Saturday evening.
