As you enter the Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, on Friday, a tree greets you with bright lamps and paper tags hung all around. A closer look reveals the names of organ donors written on lamps and testimonials of recipients.
Her liver transplant two years ago has been a life-changing experience for 19-year-old Dnyshree Ghule, who has decided to donate her organs. “Whenever I get a chance I tell people about this (organ donation) and encourage them…” reads her testimonial. Several others like her have shared how organ donation has given them a fresh lease of life.
Families of over 20 organ donors were felicitated at a meeting to launch a campaign to inspire more people to donate organs and to create awareness about organ donation. Lamps bearing the names of organ donors hung on the tree of life were illuminated to honour donors and also celebrate the second chance for life given to the recipients.
Apollo Hospitals plans to carry forward the initiative by spreading awareness about organ donation in educational institutions and corporate companies for two weeks ending August 30.
Lauding the initiative, Principal Secretary for Health and Family Welfare J. Radhakrishnan said nearly 3,800 organ donations had been done since 2008. For every organ transplant, meticulous coordination happens at various levels.
