TMC seeks 60 tmcft of Cauvery water

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Tamil Maanila Congress on Monday demanded that Karnataka release 60 tmcft of water from the Cauvery so that the state’s farmers can save the samba crop.

In a statement, TMC president G.K. Vasan condemned Karnataka’s refusal to release the water even though its dams are full. “The water level in the Mettur dam is at 55 feet and farmers are not able to sustain the samba crop. This will affect the delta and farmers in Cauvery-irrigated land of 25 lakh acres risk going without cultivation,” he said.

Mr. Vasan said Karnataka government’s decision was a violation of Supreme Court’s orders.
