Three held, idols stolen from temple seized

The Economic Offences Wing police on Wednesday seized two idols allegedly stolen from a temple in Andhra Pradesh. Three persons have been arrested.

According to a press release, a special team of the Idol Wing police was checking vehicles near Koyambedu when a car that was signalled to stop sped away. Police chased and forced the vehicle to stop.

A search revealed two panchaloka idols.

K. Lal alias Shankarlal (28), a Sri Lankan national residing at Madipakam, N. Sundararaj (31) of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and N. Senthil (31) of Sirkali in Nagapattinam district who were travelling in the vehicle were arrested.

The accused confessed to stealing the idols from a temple in Andhra Pradesh. They had got in touch with an agent in Thanjavur and sent photographs of the idols.

After he showed interest in buying them, they took the idols concealed in a farm at Gummudipoondi and were heading to Thanjavur when they were caught.
