Thirumurugan Gandhi detained

Arrested under the Goondas Act

The city Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Monday issued orders detaining Thirumurugan Gandhi, leader of May 17 Movement, under the Goondas Act along with three others, who are functionaries of Tamilar Vidyal Katchi.

They were arrested along with a few others when they attempted to stage a protest at the Marina beach in memory of Tamils who were killed in the conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

They have been lodged at the Central Prison, Puzhal.

According to a press release, the City Police Commissioner has ordered the detention of persons who indulged in criminal activities and acts which cause disturbance to peace.

Criminal cases

The police said Mr. Thirumurugan Gandhi has criminal cases against him in Saidapet, Egmore, Royapettah and Nungambakkam police stations. Tamilar Vidyal Katchi functionaries — Tyson, Jegan alias Ilamaran and Arunkumar — were detained on the grounds of having cases against them. Meanwhile. the CPI(M) and the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi condemned the invoking of the Goondas Act.
