Savita Singh was afflicted with polio when she was only six months old.
Undaunted, she went on to start a residential school for the differently abled in Uttar Pradesh and supported a number of mentally-challenged women who had been sexually harassed.
On Saturday, Ms. Singh was awarded the CavinKare Ability Award for Eminence by Ability Foundation, in recognition of her work.
At the function, graphic designer K. Janarthanan from Chennai, Praveen Vyas, founder editor of Phalodi Jayate , and Siddharth Teja, an employee with MakeMyTrip, received Mastery awards. S. Ramakrishnan, who became wheelchair-bound after an accident when he was in the Navy, started a special school in Tirunelveli that trains children with disabilities from 600 villages in the district. He was awarded the CavinKare Ability Special Recognition award.
“Ability Foundation is looking to partner with anyone who has a project that will allow people with disabilities to work on an equal footing with the rest of society,” said Jayshree Raveendran of Ability Foundation.
The winners were decided by a jury, including Rajiv Lochan, managing director and CEO, Kasturi & Sons Ltd., and Mariazeena, director of Sathyabama University.
