It was a befitting gift to the city that was celebrating her 376th birthday on Saturday.
A special postal cover was brought out to commemorate Madras Founding Day amidst a gathering of heritage lovers.
The special cover portrayed the Gold pagoda used during the Madras Presidency era in 1807 and also, other significant coins issued in the Presidency, including the half dudu in 1755.
Releasing the special postal cover at Fort Museum, Fort St. George premises at a function jointly organised by Madras Heritage Lovers’ Forum and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Postmaster general (Chennai City Region) Mervin Alexander said “we must take pride in our history and pass on the heritage to our children. More such efforts are needed to create awareness on the city’s rich history among the young generation.”
Other speakers, including Madras Heritage Lovers’ Forum’s founder D. Hemchandra Rao, too underlined the need to spread awareness about history among children.
K. Moortheeswari, deputy superintending archaeologist, ASI elaborated on the measures taken in the Fort Museum to reach out to more visitors .
“If they can't visit the museum, we visit educational institutions through mobile exhibitions,” she added.
Industrialist Nalli Kuppusamy Chetti, who supported the initiative of Madras Heritage Lovers’ Forum, spoke of his passion for learning facts about old Madras.
