The many barriers to beautification

July 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Existing encroachments on beaches seem to be hindering the beach beautification drive of the Chennai Corporation. With little space left for a makeover, the civic body is unable to incorporate changes suggested by environmental experts and marine biologists.

As part of the beautification project announced in the 2013-2014 budget, the civic body is planning to kick start the work. However, lack of adequate spaces along the beach sands has affected the project.

After environmental experts suggested the shifting of streetlight fittings from the beach side of the road in a number of spots, the civic body has not been able to find suitable spaces for commissioning fittings far away from the beach sands.

Preservation of existing beach vegetation to prevent soil erosion is yet another challenge as is finding spaces for treating sewage.

Lack of adequate space has hit plans
