The makers of Vijay-starrer ‘Thalaiva,’ who approached the city police on Friday with permission for a day’s token fast, were denied the request.
The movie has been mired in controversy and its release, earlier scheduled for the Eid weekend, was suspended after cinema halls received threats from some groups.
After various failed attempts, including one to meet the Chief Minister, to enable the film’s release, on Friday, the producer, director and music composer of Thalaiva approached the police commissioner for permission to conduct a one-day token fast.
Producer Chandraprakash Jain, director A.L. Vijay and music director G.V. Prakash arrived with a written petition at the commissionerate in Egmore to meet commissioner S. George. They were redirected to additional commissioner (central crime branch) R.S. Nallasivam who accepted the petition.
The letter said the movie’s lead actors Vijay, Amala Paul and Sathyaraj, and others along with the crew would stage a one-day token fast on Friday or Saturday at a location permitted by the city police. But the request was turned down later the same day.
According to the Madras City Police Act 1888, requests for protests or fasts can be accepted or denied following a scrutiny for a time period of four to five days.
