Cooperative powerloom and handloom societies have commenced production of around 600 lakh metres of material for supplying four sets of free uniforms to school children through out the State.
Minister for Handlooms and Textiles S. Sundaraj on Wednesday urged the various societies to speed up production so that the materials are supplied in time for stitching and distribution by June.
Last year, a total of 609 lakh metres of four different kinds of materials were supplied to the Social Welfare Department, which stitches the uniforms.
Around 90 societies in Erode, Namakkal, Tiruppur and Coimbatore are involved in production.
The Minister, who reviewed the functioning of the Department, said that three weaving and design training centres that are coming up at Paramakudi, Kumbakonam and Kancheepuram are expected to commence operation by the end of this month. The centres are being set up at a cost of Rs. 1.46 crore to bring in young blood into the weaving profession and also help weavers bring value addition to their products. “Each centre can train 600 persons,” he explained.
Designers in silk weavers’ cooperative societies and sales personnel at the outlets of various cooperative societies would also be provided training to cope up with current market trends to improve sales. The Secretary Handlooms, Handicrafts and Khadi and Village Industries, G. Santhanam, Director of Handlooms and Textiles P. Muthuveeran and Additional Director K. Karnan were present at the meeting.
