Technician injured in Chennai airport accident

November 14, 2013 08:55 am | Updated 08:55 am IST - CHENNAI:

A technical worker, an employee of the airline Spicejet, was injured in an accident at Chennai airport on Wednesday evening.

According to airport sources, the bar of a tow tractor went out of control and hit the wheels and fibre arm of an aerobridge. The aerobridge was being used for the boarding of passengers of a New Delhi-bound Spicejet aircraft.

Soon after the door of the aircraft was closed by the flight’s captain, the aerobridge was moved and placed a short distance away.

Meanwhile, the tow tractor started pushing the aircraft from the bay. While this was happening, the tow bar of the tractor suddenly went out of control and hit a technician who was nearby.

The tractor driver, in order to avoid hitting the nose wheel of the aircraft, hit the aerobridge. In the impact, the aerobridge was completely damaged, the sources said. The injured technician was taken to a hospital and underwent treatment.

An official statement from Spicejet said: “One of our experienced drivers of the push-back tractor hit the tyre of the aerobridge. This appears to be a minor incident, which, along with Directorate General of Civil Aviation, we are investigating.”
