Jayanthi P. Vinayagamoorthy, an environmental activist and resident of Sri Ram Colony, Tambaram Sanatorium, is leading a team of volunteers in removing seemai karuvelam (prosopis juliflora) from the neighbourhood. In the first phase, with the help of 15 people, he cleared trees in areas around a temple in Tambaram Sanatorium, on the western side of Grand Southern Trunk Road.

Vinayagamoorthy said, “The process of weeding out these invasive trees will be carried out across Sanatorium. Unless residents are involved in a big way, this task cannot be accomplished. They should come forward and clear these trees from their private lands.” He said steps should be taken by the authorities to remove the shrubs in the water-bodies to conserve groundwater.

“ Steps must also be taken to de-silt and deepen Chitlapakkam Eri and put an end to the dumping of garbage there and arrest the flow of sewage into the waterbody from Tambaram Sanatorium,” he added.
