Students of class X from Madras Community College, led by Student Federation of India, protested at the Directorate of Public Instruction campus on Friday.

They alleged the institution had said it would arrange for hall-ticket applications for the final examination but later informed them to apply for it themselves.

And, it was too late by then, said Arumugam, district secretary, SFI, as the dates of the practical examination were already out.

“We have not been able to appear for the practicals,” said M. Baby, one of the 48 students from class X.

G. Meenakshi, another student, said she found about the dates of the practicals from newspaper reports.

On Friday, Mr. Arumugam said they met the director of government examinations and submitted a petition for the students to be allowed to appear for the examination.

The institute, however, maintained that being a community college, their role was to just coach the students. Those who wished to appear for exams had to apply for the hall tickets by themselves.
