Students of Bharath University, Selaiyur, went on a rampage on the college premises on Monday evening, breaking glass doors, window panes, notice boards and other furniture when they were enraged after recruiters from a software company did not turn up for the campus placement tests as scheduled.

In the process, one of the students who sustained bleeding injuries in his hand had to be taken to a hospital in East Tambaram for treatment. A large number of students gathered in the portico of the university towards the evening and raised slogans against the college management.

Police personnel who were on duty outside the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, earlier in the day rushed to Bharath University. The students threatened to squat on the road outside the university's main gate, but beat a retreat after seeing the police strength. Further, policemen told them very clearly that they would not allow them to protest on the road.

Complaint

Students insisted that they speak to a senior police officer following which Ashwin Khotnis, Deputy Commissioner of Police, St. Thomas Mount, came to the spot. The students complained to the officer about the university management. After they were pacified by the policemen and the college management, the students dispersed.
