Beach-goers may have to be careful on Friday too with strong winds likely due to a well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal.
Officials of the meteorological department said that the system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring rains to coastal parts of the State. Some areas of Chennai and its suburbs too are likely to get light rains on Friday.
“We have recorded gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 35 km per hour in Chennai. Places along the coastline, including Puducherry, may experience squally weather on Friday with wind speed touching 50-60 kmph,” said an official of the department.
The sea was also rough along the city’s coastline on Thursday and the meteorological department has advised fishermen not to venture into sea on Friday.
Cyclonic storm ‘Madi’ that lost its intensity and became a well-marked low pressure area may have an impact on the State till Saturday.
An overcast sky on Thursday had left many residents hopeful of rains but ultimately, the city and its suburbs received hardly any. However, the low pressure area lying close to Nagapattinam did bring the day temperature close to normal. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of around 29 degree Celsius.
An official said that the weather models do not indicate the possibility of any prolonged rains. Chennai has so far received 42 cm of rainfall since October 1. But it is still 37 cm short of its average for northeast monsoon. Similarly, Meenambakkam has recorded 48 cm of rainfall against its seasonal average of 72 cm.
