Police suspect emotional stress could have driven IIT-Madras M.Tech student Manasa Merugu to commit suicide. The incident took place on Tuesday.
Officials said Manasa had married her classmate Srinivasa Minisala in JNTU, Hyderabad, a few months ago, but was yet to break the news to the family.
Investigations revealed that the student had gone to meet her husband who works in an IT company in Hyderabad, and had stayed there for three days, before returning to the campus on Tuesday.
The post-mortem examination on Tuesday confirmed it was a suicide.
Despite repeated attempts to contact him, her husband did not arrive to collect the body.
“He said he will arrive here by noon, but his pho was unreachable after a while. The body was finally handed over to her father, who is a carpenter,” said a police source.
“The father was inconsolable. He had come with a few relatives. They were totally unaware of her marriage,” said the policeman.
Manasa was sharing a room with seven other girls. Some of her classmates were aware of the fact that she was married. “She had recently told one of her relatives about her marriage and they were not happy about it. She had been contemplating revealing the news to her parents, but was finding it difficult,” said her friend.
The student hailed from Ramagundam in Karimnagar district .
