A baggage scanning machine has been installed at the Tambaram railway station as part of steps to improve security measures at this rail cum road hub. Personnel of the Railway Protection Force have been manning the machine, installed some days ago.
As part of its proposals to step up security in Tambaram, Southern Railway had earlier proposed the provision of permanent foolproof measures such as baggage scanning equioment.
The machine, like others in operation at Chennai Central and Chennai Airport, is able to detect the contents in hand baggage carried by passengers walking into the Tambaram railway station.
However, it is barely sufficient to scan the luggage of several thousand people on their way to board mofussil and long-distance trains in Tambaram, say railway sources. There are multiple entry points, most of them unguarded, to reach the station’s platforms. The commissioning of the scanning machine was only the beginning, the sources said, adding that more security measures would be put in place soon.
