A recent analysis by the directorate of school education indicates an overall improvement in the performance of students in the State Board Class XII examination.
However, Chennai does not feature among the 17 districts, which have consistently been improving their pass percentage over the past three years. An earlier analysis placed Chennai 12th in the State.
Over 8.5 lakh students appeared for the examination which was held in March and whose results were announced on May 9.
The latest analysis indicates that the performance of students in the State has improved over the past three years, with a significant rise in the number of schools which have managed a 100 per cent pass percentage. The number has gone up from 892 in 2011 to 1,117 this year. The number of government schools which secured 100 per cent pass percentage has leapt from 35 in 2011 to 100 in the 2013 examination.
The State recorded an overall pass percentage of 88.1 per cent this year.
Compared to 2012, 19, 651 more students in the State passed with distinction (60 per cent or above). In government schools, the number increased from 21, 888 in 2012 to 24, 088 in 2013.
Though there has been a steady increase in the overall pass percentage and the number of girls appearing for the examination, the number of centums saw a significant drop this year. While the total number has fallen from 71,982 in 2011 to 66,765 in 2013, the number in government schools fell sharply from 125 in 2011 to 72 in 2013.
While the pass percentage of students belonging to SC community in government schools has fallen from 70.7 per cent in 2012, to 70.4 in 2013, the pass percentage of students belonging to ST community rose marginally from 70 per cent in 2012 to 71.5 in 2013. Of the total number of students who failed in subjects, 42 per cent have failed in one subject, 35 per cent in two subjects, and 23 per cent in more than two subjects.
According to an earlier analysis by the Chennai chief education officer, government schools in Chennai recorded a pass percentage of 88.35.
The highest pass percentage, 97.44, was found in Anglo Indian Schools.
Educationist S.S. Rajagopalan, however, said public examination results are only a minor indicator of a school’s and child’s performance. “There is not much difference between private and government schools as far as their approach in getting a high pass percentage is concerned,” he said.
