The audience whistled and children squealed in excitement when a tall and elegant Afghan hound walked gracefully on to the stage to bag the ‘best in show’ prize at the 102 championship dog show on Sunday.
At the ‘101 and 102 All Breeds Championship Dog Show’ held at the YMCA grounds in Nandanam over the weekend, around 300 dogs of 46 breeds participated.
From Chihuahuas to a massive Great Dane, all stood obediently next to their handlers to be judged by internationally accepted standards.

At the 101st championship, the ‘best in show’ prize was given to a Retriever Labrador, while a Dachshund bagged the ‘best in show bred in India’, and a Beagle was given the ‘best puppy’ award.
The prizes were distributed by N. Ram, chairman, The Hindu and C.K. Gandhirajan, additional director general of police, enforcement. The dogs were judged by Manuel Borges from Portugal, Larry Yuen from Malaysia and Mathew C. John from India.
Dog lovers went around the venue looking at the dogs. “I used to have a Labrador named Goldie, and my son loved it. As it died a year ago, I brought my son here so he could enjoy looking at all the dogs. I am planning to get another dog soon,” said M. Venkatesh, who had come with his family.
