The State government has issued guidelines for desirable safety methods, including provision of ramps in existing high-rise hospital buildings, following the directions of the Madras High Court.
The guidelines state that the provision of ramp, wherever possible, subject to availability of space and structural stability of the building may be provided in these hospital buildings.
In cases of multiple buildings on a single campus, a ramp between buildings connecting their corridors may be provided.
The Health Department has also given guidelines for unapproved hospital buildings constructed before July 1, 2007 which were eligible for regularisation under the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971.
The provision of ramps was to be made compulsory in unapproved buildings constructed after 2007.
The guidelines also make suggestions for fire-fighting equipment, mock drills every six months, a minimum of two large ‘louvered’ windows, among others, in these buildings.
