State has no regard for human rights: PUCL

June 03, 2017 12:05 am | Updated 12:05 am IST - Chennai

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has condemned the State government for invoking the Goondas Act against Thirumurugan Gandhi of the May 17 Movement and three others.

The detention of the four under the Goondas Act was a violation of human rights, the PUCL activists said at a press conference here on Friday.

K. Sudhir, president, PUCL, said that the Goondas Act should normally be invoked by the police against habitual offenders but the detention of these four for attempting to hold a candle light vigil for the Sri Lankan Tamils who were killed by the Sri Lankan Army shows the utter disregard for human rights.
