An engineering student of SRM University in Kattankalathur committed suicide by jumping off a building on the campus on Monday.

Police said the college withheld his scores in recent exams as he was allegedly caught for ‘malpractice’. However, no suicide note has been recovered and there is no complaint filed against the college.

On hearing the news, a large number of students gathered in front of the hostel premises, which resulted in unrest. A posse of police personnel was deployed to prevent any untoward incident.

According to police sources, Sai Nitin from Andhra Pradesh was in his final year of mechanical engineering at SRM University. In November, when the examinations took place, a supervisor allegedly caught him with a piece of paper containing answers. Following this, his scores were withheld and a fine was imposed. His parents were also informed about it.

“After his parents were informed, he felt humiliated and took his own life,” an investigating officer said. “He jumped off the building inside the campus and died instantly,” he added. “As of now, there is no complaint against the institution.”

The body was sent to Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital for post mortem.
