Nine Indian fishermen in two boats, which reportedly drifted into the Sri Lankan waters in two separate incidents in the last five days, have received help from Sri Lankan authorities after being alerted by the Indian Coast Guard.
A statement from the Coast Guard stated that the High Commission of India at Colombo was intimated on the sighting of an Indian fishing boat with three fishermen on board on September 20. The boat, which had “drifted” into Sri Lankan waters due to shortage of fuel, was provided with 150 litres of fuel by Sri Lankan Navy and released. In another incident on September 21, a fishing boat from Rameswaram with 6 fishermen, failed to return after which the owner had alerted Coast Guard.
