March 23, 2017 01:05 am | Updated 01:05 am IST - Thoothukudi

The Thoothukudi district administration has constituted squads in all taluks to detect whether consignments of beach sand minerals were stocked in godowns of V.V. Mineral.

“The special squads will check whether the beach minerals were legally sourced and stocked,” Collector M. Ravikumar told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

A ban on illegal mining of beach mineral sand is in place in the coastal districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari since August 8, 2013.

However, the Customs officials at the Port here detained an export consignment of beach minerals after the transport permit / quantity certification document furnished by the consignor, V.V. Mineral, Thisayinvilai, was found to be fake.

The Assistant Director of Mines, Krishnamohan, has been suspended for certifying a document.
