Four youths died in road accidents in and around the city on the eve of New Year. Over 80 minor accidents and skirmishes involving inebriated revellers were reported from different localities.
According to Adyar traffic police sources, around 10.45 p.m. on Thursday, three youngsters on a motorcycle rammed a stationary lorry on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. While Balasubramanium (21) and Karthik (21), residents of Vadapalani, died on the spot, Manikandan (22) was admitted to a hospital in Perungudi with critical injuries.
In Panaiyur around 1.15 a.m. on Friday, passersby noticed the body of Rajesh Kumar (20), a resident of Mylapore, lying on the road. Police said he died after the motorcycle in which he was travelling collided with an unidentified vehicle. His friends, Harikrishnan (21) and Udayakumar (20) were injured. Harikrishnan’s condition is critical.
In an accident in the early hours of Friday, Desingu (24) died on the spot on Grand Southern Trunk Road in Perungalathur. He and his friend fell off their motorcycle when they tried to speed past a police post.
Vehicles damaged
Two groups of revellers on Trust 7th Cross Street in Periyakkara Kuppam, Mandavelipakkam, were involved in a skirmish.
The youngsters, reportedly in an inebriated state, damaged three cars, two autorickshaws and four two-wheelers parked on the street and on Trust 6th, 12th and 14th Cross Street. Three youths were arrested.
