Peerkankaranai police have arrested a soldier and his friend on charges of assaulting traffic policemen on Wednesday night.

Police officers said Kanagaraj (29), who was stationed in north India, was in Chennai on vacation. He had come to his uncle’s house in Perunglathur on Wednesday and, along with a friend Arun, boarded a bus there in the evening to reach Saidapet.

However, the conductor told him that the bus would travel on Chennai Bypass and not pass through Saidapet. Kanagaraj, who was reportedly inebriated, quarrelled with the conductor and got down with Arun.

He then began arguing with a traffic police constable Senthil, whom he accused of not pulling up the conductor, and then slapped him.

A few more policemen, who were on duty at the time, rushed to Senthil’s help and bundled Kanagaraj and Arun into an autorickshaw. It is reported that the men assaulted the policemen inside the auto too. They were taken to Peerkankaranai police station, where a case was registered.
