Smuggled electronic goods valued at Rs.1.11 crore were seized by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) near the airport in Meenambakkam on Saturday. DRI sources said a 500 kg consignment, declared as automobile spare parts, reached the Chennai airport on Wednesday from Singapore by Singapore Airlines. Following a tip off about the involvement of a Chennai-based smuggling gang, DRI officials were monitoring the air cargo complex.

“Around 8 p.m. on Saturday, our officials intercepted a vehicle carrying the consignment, in 15 cartons, outside the air cargo complex. On inspection, we found digital cameras, handycams, camera flashes and batteries worth Rs.1.11 crore inside the boxes,” said C. Rajan, Additional Director General, DRI (Chennai).

Ramesh (33), a resident of Royapuram, who brought out the consignment meant for India Impex Logistics Pvt Ltd, Meenambakkam, from the cargo complex, was arrested, Mr. Rajan added.
