The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from Chennai Police Commissioner on five police personnel, who were seen assaulting a 21-year-old man in T. Nagar earlier this month.

Though the SHRC had summoned Sub-Inspector Suresh, Special Sub-Inspector Jayaraman attached to Mambalam police station, to appear before it on Wednesday, they failed to do so.

When the Commission followed up with the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office whether the summons was served, both the policemen appeared on Thursday.

The copy of the complaint by the Prakash, the victim in the case, was served to the policemen. The Commission has also summoned three other police personnel — Inspector (Law and Order) Prabhu, Sub-Inspector Indhumathi and Special Sub-Inspector Suyambulingam to appear before it on May 15 in connection with the incident.

The SHRC had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of the scuffle between the youth and police personnel in the incident after which youth was arrested. The youth was stopped by the police as he was not wearing a helmet and was riding with two pillion riders.

An argument between both the parties turned into a scuffle in public view and was caught on camera. A clipping of five police personnel assaulting the youth went viral in the social media with criticism over the high-handedness of the police.
