Inspector of Police R. Pushparaj of Neelankarai station was suspended on Wednesday after he allegedly shot a 16-year-old boy during interrogation at his police station on Tuesday evening. The victim has been admitted to a private hospital and his condition is said to be stable.
Police sources said the incident took place around 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday after the teenager was picked up while attempting to break open a temple hundi in Vettuvankeni early on Tuesday. His family members were not informed of his detention.
The teenager suffered a flesh wound from the bullet fired from the .038 mm revolver of Mr. Pushparaj and was rushed to the Global Hospital in Perumbakkam. Police claimed it was an accident on Tuesday. An enquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer was ordered into the shooting following which Tambaram RDO Indrajith carried out a probe.
Meanwhile Commissioner of Police S. George on Wednesday issued suspension orders to Mr. Pushparaj who has been booked under Section 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC by the Neelankarai police.
A three-hour surgery to repair damaged blood vessels was conducted on the teenager from 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The injury was on the left side of the neck and the boy is lucky to have survived, hospital sources said. After the surgery, he interacted with his mother and other family members. He has been kept under observation at an isolated ward and is out of danger.
