The convenience of commuting short distances at affordable cost hitherto availed by general public is all set to become a thing of the past from June 27 as the trade unions / associations representing petrol, diesel and share autorickshaws and mini-vans have agreed to operate these vehicles as “point-to-point” public carriers only.
According to the Revenue Divisional Officer, Kancheepuram, R.Veerappan, who convened a meeting of officials and trade union / association representatives here on Friday, it was decided that mini-vans, petrol and diesel autorickshaws would not be operated as stage carriers, that is, picking up or dropping passengers en route. Share auto-permit holding vehicles alone could be operated as stage carriers.
Further, it has also been agreed that legal action would be initiated against these vehicles if they were found violating the provisions of Motor Vehicle Act such as carrying passengers over and above the sanctioned capacity, and so on, the RDO said.
Stands to park mini-vans at 13 points within and on the outskirts of Kancheepuram town have also been identified and fixed.
