On January 28, the Palavakkam beach will become an open studio for one of India’s largest sand-sculpting contests, organised by Save A Turtle, a group of turtle conservations, along with EZone, an experiential learning organisation and Jeppiaar Engineering College on Old Mahabalipuram Road. Participants will be expected to sculpt on the theme, “Turtles and Seashores”.
The sand-sculpting contest is a precursor to a range of awareness programmes that will continue till February.
“The contest is aimed at highlighting the need to establish a sustainable relationship with the environment. Each species plays a significant role in sustaining the ecosystem,” says Hafiz Khan of Ezone.
Save A Turtle is a team of volunteers, some of them drawn from voluntary groups, who walk along the Chennai coastline during the Olive Ridley nesting season to collect turtle eggs and take them to the hatchery. Registrations are open for the non-competitive sand-sculpting contest.
According to the organisers, each team must have five members, who have to register and provide their contact information on the Facebook page of Save A Turtle.
Cash prizes of ₹7,500 and ₹5,000 will be given to the first two winners.
